Koi Ponds Installation

A koi pond isn't a decorative pool with fish dropped in — it's a living ecosystem built around the koi, where filtration, plants, rock, and moving water work together to keep the water clear and the fish healthy. Get that balance right and the pond largely takes care of itself; get it wrong and it turns green and becomes a chore. At Chattanooga Water Garden Repair and Installation, we design and build ecosystem koi ponds for homes and businesses across the Chattanooga area, from the first sketch to the day your koi go in — and we build them to run clear and low-maintenance for years.

What Goes Into a Koi Pond

A healthy koi pond comes down to a handful of components working together:

A skimmer that pulls leaves and surface debris out of the water before they sink and rot
A biological filter — the BioFalls unit that also starts your waterfall — where beneficial bacteria break down waste and keep the water clear
A properly sized pump that circulates and oxygenates the whole pond
Rock and gravel that give beneficial bacteria a home and make the pond look natural
Aquatic plants that absorb nutrients, shade the water, and starve out algae
A waterfall or stream that adds oxygen, sound, and movement
Enough depth — at least three feet for koi — to keep the water temperature stable, give the fish room to grow, and protect them from predators and winter

Our Koi Pond Installation Process
Every koi pond starts with design and placement. We help you choose a spot with some shade to keep the water cool and algae down, away from large trees whose roots and leaves cause problems, then lay out a shape and depth sized to the koi you want. From there we excavate the pond with shelves at different depths — a shallow shelf for marginal plants and a deeper central zone for the fish — and set an underlayment and a heavy-duty EPDM liner to hold water for the long haul.

With the shell in place, we install the skimmer, biological filter, pump, and plumbing, then rock and gravel the pond from the bottom up and build the waterfall so it looks like the water carved its own path. Finally, we fill and dechlorinate the pond, add the first dose of beneficial bacteria and the aquatic plants, and introduce your koi gradually so the ecosystem has time to balance rather than being overloaded on day one. Most ponds take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on size.

Why Professional Installation Matters
A koi pond is a living ecoystem. A pond dug too shallow for the fish to survive summer heat or winter cold, filtration that's undersized or missing a piece so the water declines fast, poor circulation that leaves stagnant zones, or a spot under trees that fills with leaves and runoff. We build to precise specifications for depth, filtration, and rock placement, secure the stone so it holds for years, and size the whole system to the fish, so the finished pond is a balanced ecosystem instead of a hole that just holds water. A cheaply built pond costs more to run for as long as you own it, so we build it right the first time.

The Benefits of a Koi Pond
Built correctly, a koi pond is a self-regulating ecosystem that stays clear with light, routine care — no constant battle with green water. You get crystal-clear water you can see the fish through, healthy koi that grow, color up, and can live for decades, and a backyard focal point that draws in birds and frogs and adds real value to the property. More than anything, it's a place to slow down — the sound of the waterfall and the movement of the fish make it the spot in the yard you'll actually want to spend time.
